Me, generally: Do young people get arthritis? Because I have a terrible suspicion that I’m getting arthritis in my right thumb.
Everybody: *crowds around to look at my thumb*
Law School Ninja: Well. You’re not really young, Mom.
Me: Have fun paying for law school, kid.
Him: I have a scholarship
Me: Have fun living in a cardboard box at law school, kid.

Re right thumb: Could this be a repetitive stress injury (RSI)? Possibly due to whatever “mousing” device you use with your computer. . . . It is likely if the pain is primarily in the joint at the base of the thumb.
If so:
– Think ergonomics re your hand position. A flat hand position rather than a wrist cocked-up position is optimal.
– The mouse should fit your hand. Like Goldilocks – the mouse shouldn’t be too small or too big for your particular hand size. That is a relatively inexpensive fix.
– On the other hand, if you need more, there are therapeutic mice like a vertical mouse of a hand-shoe mouse.
Then there are stretch thumb/wrist splints and all sorts of other options. Between beading and keyboarding, I’ve tried lots of things over the years.
Oh, thank you so much for this! I do have an ergo mouse, but the splint is a good idea. The pain is in the joint in the middle of my thumb. 🙁
