All Tess wanted to do was play softball. Why do dead bodies have to keep showing up?

And what's up with that ogre in the outfield?

When the annual Dead End, Florida, softball game ends up with three strikes, shapeshifting tiger Jack and not-quite-vanilla-human Tess, with the help of family and friends, have to be sure they're not the ones who are out.

And when a very pregnant witch comes to town ... the poisoned popcorn is the least of the town's problems!

But never fear -- Jack and Tess are on the case. Because sometimes it takes a tiger's eye to see the truth.

Life is getting crazy -- again -- in Dead End!!

There's a robbery!

Five minutes after I opened the shop, a masked man walked in and tried to rob me.

I knew I should have stayed in bed.

He shoved something approximately gun-barrel shaped in his pocket toward me. “Hand over the goods, and nobody gets hurt.”

Having faced down a lot worse over the past year, I didn’t freak out. Instead, I looked slowly and deliberately around my empty shop. “Nobody? There’s just you and me here. So, do you mean I won’t get hurt? Or that you might hurt yourself?”

And exploding popcorn!

Jack lifted the paper bag and walked it out to a sturdy metal trash can near the dugout. When he tossed it in, Rose lifted her arms and spoke an incantation, and the paper bag exploded into a ball of fire, sending flaming bits of popcorn everywhere.

And babies!

“We’re going to have babies,” I said, feeling shell-shocked. “Aunt Ruby, what do we do?”

“The only midwife in Dead End is out of town at a convention in Chicago,” Aunt Ruby said calmly. “We need to get Rose to the hospital in Orlando right now. We can’t take any chances with twins.”

“I’m not sure that’s an option,” Rose said, her voice unnaturally steady, considering. “My water just broke.”
