When everything happens at once…
Hey, y’all. I could really use some healing thoughts and prayers for my mom.
This has been a rough couple of weeks. I got a call that Mom had a heart incident, fell, and broke a bone in her pelvis. I flew up to Pittsburgh and spent several ten-hour days in her room at the VA hospital.
The staff there is tremendous, and we are so grateful for their kindness. When someone you love is in a hospital bed, that kindness matters more than I can say.
The news wasn’t great. It’s going to be a long recovery. Mom has moved to rehab now, where she’ll stay for some time. After that, we’re moving her to assisted living, where she can keep some independence and get the help she needs.
That move was already in the works. We just thought we had more time.
There are a few other things going on, too, and I’m behind on more than one deadline. The stress is astronomical. Apparently, deadlines do not quietly excuse themselves when your family has an emergency. Rude.
I started to write, “I’m sorry to overshare.”
Then I stopped.
If I can only show up here when I’ve gotten through the hard part and found something wise to say about it, I’m leaving out the part where I could most use some company.
The part where I’m still worried. Still figuring out what happens next. Still trying to work while part of my brain is in a hospital room several states away.
I share the good and the bad because we all have tough times we need to survive. Knowing that doesn’t make this easier, exactly. But I hope being honest about mine makes someone else feel a little less alone in theirs.
I’m trying to be optimistic. I love my mom. I’m worried about her. I’m grateful she’s getting care, and I wish she didn’t need it. All of that is happening at once.
So today, I’m asking for healing thoughts and prayers for her—and giving myself permission to ask.
If you’re in the middle of something hard, too, you don’t have to turn it into an inspiring story before you’re allowed to talk about it. Your family and friends will understand. Or post it here — I’ll give you all the support I can. If you feel like sharing, tell me how you’re doing. “It’s been a lot” is a complete answer.
Storms pass. Pain ends. I will never quit.
Love,
Alyssa
