On depression … my fish have died
Last week was pretty rough. I sometimes have a hard time explaining
depression to people who have never experienced it, and I often use this comic by the amazing Allie Brosh. I call it the “My fish died” comic — it explains how even the most well-meaning people can get it completely wrong when trying to understand. The hardest thing to explain is how depression–which is not the same as sadness–can strike even when things in your life are going well.
If you love somebody with mental health issues, maybe read it and share it. Or just share it to your social media, where it might help someone. https://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2013/05/depression-part-two.html
That depression post is amazing, found you from Ilona Andrew’s blog thank you for sharing the above post because I suffer from major depression and this has inspired me to retake my meds again seriously. Kudos for the share and kudos to original artist that shared. I needed it. Xoxo
Niki, thank you so much for writing. And yes please take your meds if your doctor says to do it. I made the mistake of thinking I was “cured” a few times and went off mine, only to sink into the Gray so fast. Now I liken depression to diabetes. We wouldn’t quit taking our insulin because we felt better. As always, medical advice is the way to go. Hugs to you. And remember: depression lies. We all deserve to feel good. xoxo, Alyssa
